If you saw my Instagram page this week, then you know we had our first family trip to Cornwall last weekend. And let me just say, it was worth the 6 hour + journey from London with an 11 month old. We had the best time and could not have asked for better weather or a better experience.
On the first night we staying in the beautiful cathedral city of Truro at The Alverton. The gorgeous grade II listed building was built in 1830, boasts 50 rooms, and is the only four-star silver hotel in Truro. It’s also just a short 10 minute stroll into town from the hotel.
One of the first things you notice is how gorgeous the grounds of the hotel are. There is so much green area, which we enjoyed exploring.
We stayed in one of the hotel’s 15 individually designed courtyard rooms and it was nothing short of luxurious. The Chapel suite featured beautiful vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, bespoke furniture, a gorgeous free-standing copper bathtub, and all the amenities you’d expect for a luxury stay.
The copper bathtub was a definite hit with all of us, especially Sebastian who had a little play in it.
We dined at the hotel’s Brasserie restaurant, which is run by chef Simon George and serves a mix of contemporary cuisine and restaurant classics.
We had a gorgeous dinner and the service was fantastic. Sebastian had a little bit of a meltdown and the staff were unbelievably accommodating and understanding. Exactly what you need when you’re traveling with little ones.
I went to bed very happy, had the most comfortable sleep, and woke up to a yummy breakfast featuring a mix of cold and made to order hot food. The perfect way to end a wonderful stay.
After breakfast we made the short car journey to Falmouth and checked into The Alverton’s sister hotel, The Greenbank. Elegantly perched on the waterfront with beautiful panoramic views of the harbour, the 60 bedroom, four star hotel is the oldest in Falmouth. It is the only hotel in the South West to boast its own quay and private pontoons, meaning you can travel to it by land or sea. The hotel also has easy access to boat hires and water-sport activities.
We were lucky enough to stay in the Master Suite and it was just perfect. It featured a private lounge, roll top tub, and beautiful harbour facing bay windows, that step out onto a large balcony overlooking the harbour.
Seeing how mesmerised Sebastian was with the views, made the trip that much more special.
Before dinner we had a few cocktails at the hotel’s Water’s Edge restaurant, which we enjoyed on the terrace. Whilst enjoying our drinks, we ordered Sebastian his dinner and I was so impressed with how accommodating the restaurant was with our dietary requirements for him.
I think Sebastian was pretty impressed himself. He cleared his plate.
For Dinner, we dined at the hotel's recently re-opened Working Boat Pub, and the food and drink we’re both delicious. It was pub grub on another level.
After dinner, we enjoyed a couple of drinks at the hotel bar, before retiring back to the room to an incredibly comfortable bed. Sebastian thought so, too.
On our final morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant, whilst admiring the beautiful views once more.
We finished off our stay with a delicious lunch and a family photo by the water.
I cannot recommend The Alverton or The Greenbank Hotel enough. In terms of service, food, and accommodation— all surpassed my expectations.
The views at both hotels were also plentiful, as were the amenities on offer.
Suffice to say, the warm welcome and positive experience at both hotels helped make our first family trip to Cornwall very special. We will definitely be coming back.
